Diesel n'Dub, King Tide + NAISDA @ The Rhythm Hut

"Diesel n'Dub was a dream of mine for a long while. I had heard some of the Midnight Oil songs sung by other people and especially First Australians, then with my love of reggae music felt it right to fuse the two together. Reggae has always been a platform for rebel music, and Midnight Oil has always been a band that addresses world issues in a powerful musical way. I am always humbled by their willingness to take a stand and voice out what needs to be said. To invite prominent Indigenous singers to sing the parts once sung by Peter Garrett seemed very fitting.”
~ Declan Kelly

"The following artists feature in the album such as Emma Donovan, Frank Yamma, Katie Noonan, Alex Lloyd, Radical Son, Pat Powell, Stiff Gins, Tony Hughes, Tina Harrod, Stu Fergie and mixed by Mad Professor.

In keeping with Kelly’s vision the songs have been reinvented as dub reggae gems, adding weight to their timeless messages of self-realisation and equality for all peoples, while giving powerful Australian voices the opportunity to present these important songs in their own flavor. From the outset Kelly was determined that the project give back and set it up to raise awareness of Indigenous literacy issues and funds for the crucial work of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. The project was set up by Declan Kelly who along with label Diaspora Music, have become officially registered fundraisers for the foundation. Kelly and Diaspora Music are committed to donating a fixed percentage of profits generated from sales and exploitation of the recordings directly to the cause on behalf of all the artists involved with the project.

Declan Kelly is now bringing the Diesel n’Dub project on the road, and The Rhythm Hut is honoured to be a part of this event, and will be the first stop on the tour! Declan will be bringing a full band, along with very special guests Tony Hughes, Radical Son, and Pat Powell.

Supporting Diesel n'Dub on the night was Sydney reggae outfit King Tide, along with a very special performance from students at NAISDA Dance College.

Aria award nominees King Tide are Australia’s’ premier original Rock Steady Reggae gut soul band. With appearance’s at festivals as wide and varied as “Sydney Festival Opening Night”, “Womadalaide”, “Ragamuffin festival”, “The Great Escape”, “Peats Ridge Festival”, “Wave Rock Weekender” W.A, Coast Fest”, “Playground Weekender”, “Reggaetown”,“Island Vibes Festival” “Sub Sonic Festival”, “Mullum Fest”, “Wollombi Fest”, “Rainbow Serpent Festival”, and recently headlining Reggaefest in Ballina with and as the backing band for Jamaican studio one legend Stranger Cole.

Celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island cultures from around Australia, NAISDA Dance College has been at the forefront of Contemporary Indigenous Dance and education for nearly 40 years.

Culture is at the heart of NAISDA and they offer a unique opportunity for students (Developing Artists as we call them) to learn about the world’s oldest living culture and traditional and contemporary dance in a formal vocational, cultural and educational setting. "

"Rhythm Hunters blend sounds from Indonesia, Japan, Africa and modern day Australia to provide cutting edge physical percussion, didgeridoo, Western horns, Asian flute, deep grooves and ethereal soundscapes that mesmerize and captivate. Rhythm Hunters is like no other group delivering a visual fusion of new approaches to drumming, indigenous songs, sharp melodic breaks with strong influences from the shamanic traditions of Sumatra, Indonesia.

These images were captured at the Building Bridges Festival 2013
It was the 2nd year the 2013 Building Bridges Festival hit the stage at the Standard to present a host of Australian musical talent.

The Building Bridges Fesitival was an evening of music to support refugee rights and end mandatory detention. The Refugee Action Coalition (RAC), in conjunction with the Refugee Art Project (RAP), proudly presented the Building Bridges Music Festival.

Some of the images below display the LADOAI dance which is still undeniably one of the most evocative pieces of music from Rhythm Hunters.

"Dirty Sweet Nothings are a group of songs based on the diary pages of a hedonistic romantic Sydneysider. As the songs came to life, a band was formed that could only be aptly named Dirty Sweet Nothings. That's what they play, that's what they are. Carried out by a huge sounding three-piece band, the blushing lyrics wrap themselves around bluesy foot stomping grooves."

Fabulous wines at a special celebration at the 222nd birthday of Austrian winery Salomon. I was lucky enough to sample some of Bert and Gertrude's favourite wines including one of their reserve wines from 1967.
Captured at the amazing Woy Woy Fishermen's Wharf

"For the last 222 years, Salomon Undhof has produced white wines from the best terraced sites along the Danube. Kristall clear wines with fine minerality.
The style of Salomon Undhof wines is an alliance between character, balance and harmony. Wines meant to be drunk young are fresh and subtle; wines for keeping acquire with age a luscious complexity. The wines of Salomon Undhof are found on the finest tables all over the world.
The winery is situated in the the eastern part of the “ cultural world heritage site” Wachau with the appelation Kremstal DAC.
Salomon Undhof is founding member of the association Traditionsweingüter Österreich."
